Half-Kneeling Dumbbell Press

Train a single-arm press while the half-kneeling position makes the trunk and hip position easier to notice.

01 / Set up

Build the position.

  1. Kneel with the opposite foot in front and keep the front foot planted beneath the knee.
  2. Hold one dumbbell at shoulder height and stack the ribs over the pelvis without forcing a tuck.

02 / Execute

Do the work.

  1. Press the dumbbell overhead while keeping the torso tall and the shoulder blade moving naturally.
  2. Pause when the arm reaches a controlled overhead position without leaning away.
  3. Lower the dumbbell to the shoulder with the same path and reset before the next rep.

Useful cues

Stay tall on the knee

Reach without shrugging

Keep the ribs stacked

03 / Troubleshoot

Common ways it drifts.

  • Arching the low back to finish the press
  • Using a load that makes the knee or trunk position unstable

01

Resistance training is the supported category.

The 2026 ACSM position stand supports progressive resistance training for muscle function, hypertrophy, and physical performance in generally healthy adults, with multiple workable equipment and prescription choices.

02

Range and cues remain adjustable.

A systematic review found that resistance-training range can affect strength and lower-limb hypertrophy, while a separate review found that attentional-focus effects vary across lifting tasks and populations.
