Hinge / Developing
Slam Ball Overhead Slam
Practice a repeatable power release with a ball that must be recovered and reset after each rep.

01 / Set up
Build the position.
- Choose a slam ball and impact surface that match the manufacturer boundary, then mark the recovery lane.
- Stand with the ball held in front of the body, feet stable, and enough room to raise and release it without crossing a walkway.
02 / Execute
Do the work.
- Raise the ball overhead while keeping the ribs controlled and the path clear.
- Drive the ball toward the marked surface by folding through the hips and knees, then release rather than chasing it down.
- Let the ball settle, recover it with a stable hinge, and reset the stance before the next repetition.
Useful cues
Own the lane before the rep
Release down, do not throw forward
Recover the ball before rushing
03 / Troubleshoot
Common ways it drifts.
- Using a surface or ceiling height that was never checked
- Following the ball outside the marked recovery path
- Continuing after the pickup or trunk position becomes unclear

What this page can claim.
Research can support a training category or expose a hazard without proving every stance, range, cue, or progression on this page.
2 evidence notes / 3 source linksResistance training is the supported category.
The 2026 ACSM position stand supports progressive resistance training for muscle function, hypertrophy, and physical performance in generally healthy adults, with multiple workable equipment and prescription choices.

Range and cues remain adjustable.
A systematic review found that resistance-training range can affect strength and lower-limb hypertrophy, while a separate review found that attentional-focus effects vary across lifting tasks and populations.
