Hinge / Advanced
Kettlebell Swing
Practice a ballistic hip-hinge pattern with a load that can travel through a controlled, repeatable arc.

01 / Set up
Build the position.
- Place the kettlebell a short step in front of the feet and start with a stable hinge.
- Grip the handle, brace lightly, and keep a clear path for the bell and feet.
02 / Execute
Do the work.
- Hike the bell back between the thighs without turning the movement into a squat.
- Drive the floor away and let the hips project the bell forward.
- Allow the bell to return as the hips hinge, then park it under control.
Useful cues
Hinge, do not squat
Let the hips move the bell
Park it cleanly
03 / Troubleshoot
Common ways it drifts.
- Lifting the bell with the shoulders
- Continuing the set after the hinge or return becomes unclear

What this page can claim.
Research can support a training category or expose a hazard without proving every stance, range, cue, or progression on this page.
2 evidence notes / 3 source linksResistance training is the supported category.
The 2026 ACSM position stand supports progressive resistance training for muscle function, hypertrophy, and physical performance in generally healthy adults, with multiple workable equipment and prescription choices.

Range and cues remain adjustable.
A systematic review found that resistance-training range can affect strength and lower-limb hypertrophy, while a separate review found that attentional-focus effects vary across lifting tasks and populations.
