What should a warm-up actually do?
Scope: This guide is for generally healthy adults preparing for self-directed home exercise. It is not injury screening, rehabilitation, or a guarantee against injury.
The purpose
Prepare for the work that is actually coming.
A systematic review of thirty-two high-quality studies found that warm-up improved performance in most of the reported criteria. The result supports preparation before performance, but the authors also noted that randomized evidence was limited.
The useful question is not whether a routine looks athletic. It is whether the person becomes more ready to perform the movements, ranges, speed, and effort that the session requires.

The sequence
Move from general readiness to specific rehearsal.
A practical sequence begins with easy activity, then explores the ranges needed in the session, and finally rehearses the exact movement pattern. This is an editorial application of the warm-up evidence, not a claim that one fixed sequence was proven superior.
For a home strength session, a few minutes of easy movement can lead into controlled squats, hinges, presses, or rows that resemble the work ahead. Unrelated drills do not become mandatory because they are labeled mobility.

The bridge
Approach the working demand in steps.
Before demanding strength work, use one or more easier practice sets to confirm position, range, and control. Add load or effort gradually instead of asking the first repetition to solve every part of the task.
The number of steps should reflect the demand. Familiar bodyweight work may need very little preparation, while a heavier or less familiar movement can justify more rehearsal.

The mobility choice
Use stretching when it solves a range problem.
Stretching is one possible part of preparation, not the definition of a warm-up. Reviews show that stretching method, duration, and the activity that follows can change the immediate performance effect.
When immediate strength or power matters, dynamic movement and specific rehearsal are the clearer defaults. A brief static hold can still be a reasonable choice when it helps someone use a comfortable position and does not replace practice of the task.

The boundary
Do not sell preparation as insurance.
The warm-up review evaluated immediate performance, not a universal injury-prevention guarantee. Sport programs may combine balance, strength, landing, and skill work, so their results cannot be reduced to simply becoming warm.
Use the warm-up to improve readiness and reveal how the movement feels today. Pain, instability, unusual symptoms, or a clinician's restriction require a different decision than adding more drills.
