Pull / Foundation

Ring Row

Train horizontal pulling with the ring height and body angle defining the starting challenge.

Training equipment arranged as distinct movement tools beside a bench

01 / Set up

Build the position.

  1. Set both rings to the same height, inspect the straps and anchor, and stand beneath a clear return lane.
  2. Lean back with the feet planted, arms long, and the trunk held in one organized line.

02 / Execute

Do the work.

  1. Pull the handles toward the lower ribs while keeping the straps clear of the arms.
  2. Pause when the chest reaches the chosen line without shrugging or losing the trunk position.
  3. Lower the body under control until the arms are long and reset the feet before repeating.

Useful cues

Keep the straps quiet

Row the chest between the hands

Own the lean

03 / Troubleshoot

Common ways it drifts.

  • Allowing one ring to sit higher than the other
  • Using a hip snap or neck reach to finish the pull

01

Resistance training is the supported category.

The 2026 ACSM position stand supports progressive resistance training for muscle function, hypertrophy, and physical performance in generally healthy adults, with multiple workable equipment and prescription choices.

02

Range and cues remain adjustable.

A systematic review found that resistance-training range can affect strength and lower-limb hypertrophy, while a separate review found that attentional-focus effects vary across lifting tasks and populations.
