Slam Ball Bear-Hug Squat

Add a front-held load to a controlled squat without confusing a slam ball's impact role with a fixed medicine-ball catch.

01 / Set up

Build the position.

  1. Choose a ball that can be held close without blocking the feet or changing the intended range.
  2. Brace the ball against the chest, keep the feet stable, and leave a clear set-down location beside the lane.

02 / Execute

Do the work.

  1. Lower the hips and knees together while keeping the ball close to the trunk.
  2. Pause at the deepest position that keeps the feet planted and the torso controlled.
  3. Stand without letting the ball pull the shoulders forward, then place it down before the grip or stance changes.

Useful cues

Keep the load close

Use the range you can repeat

Set it down before control fades

03 / Troubleshoot

Common ways it drifts.

  • Choosing a ball too large to keep close to the body
  • Letting the ball drift forward and change the squat balance
  • Dropping the ball into an unverified surface after the set

01

Resistance training is the supported category.

The 2026 ACSM position stand supports progressive resistance training for muscle function, hypertrophy, and physical performance in generally healthy adults, with multiple workable equipment and prescription choices.

02

Range and cues remain adjustable.

A systematic review found that resistance-training range can affect strength and lower-limb hypertrophy, while a separate review found that attentional-focus effects vary across lifting tasks and populations.
