Squat / Developing
Sandbag Front Squat
Train a controlled squat while the shifting sandbag stays supported in front of the trunk.

01 / Set up
Build the position.
- Bring a declared, submaximal sandbag to a stable bear-hug or front hold on a clear, durable surface.
- Set the feet where the bag can stay close without blocking the knees, toes, or measured return lane.
02 / Execute
Do the work.
- Breathe and brace gently, then lower with the knees and hips moving together while the bag stays close.
- Pause at the deepest position you can control without losing the front hold or foot contact.
- Stand through the whole foot, regain a tall front position, and stop before the filler shift changes the path.
Useful cues
Keep the bag close
Stay over the whole foot
Own the pause
03 / Troubleshoot
Common ways it drifts.
- Letting the bag drift away as the knees bend
- Chasing depth after the front hold or foot contact has changed
Exercise evidence field
What this page can claim.
Research can support a training category or expose a hazard without proving every stance, range, cue, or progression on this page.
3 evidence notes / 4 source linksResistance training is the supported category.
The 2026 ACSM position stand supports progressive resistance training for muscle function, hypertrophy, and physical performance in generally healthy adults, with multiple workable equipment and prescription choices.

Range and cues remain adjustable.
A systematic review found that resistance-training range can affect strength and lower-limb hypertrophy, while a separate review found that attentional-focus effects vary across lifting tasks and populations.

Loaded carries change the walking task.
A systematic review of 11 strongman-biomechanics studies found that the farmer's walk changed stride characteristics and ground-reaction forces compared with unloaded walking.
