Goblet Squat

Add front-loaded resistance to a squat while reinforcing an upright, controlled working position.

01 / Set up

Build the position.

  1. Hold one dumbbell or kettlebell close to the chest with the load fully supported.
  2. Set the feet in a stable squat stance and establish full-foot pressure.

02 / Execute

Do the work.

  1. Descend by bending the knees and hips while keeping the load close to the torso.
  2. Pause before position or balance changes, rather than chasing a fixed depth.
  3. Drive through the whole foot and stand without letting the load pull forward.

Useful cues

Keep the load close

Make room between the knees

Stand through the floor

03 / Troubleshoot

Common ways it drifts.

  • Holding the weight away from the chest
  • Allowing the elbows or load to pull the trunk forward

01

Resistance training is the supported category.

The 2026 ACSM position stand supports progressive resistance training for muscle function, hypertrophy, and physical performance in generally healthy adults, with multiple workable equipment and prescription choices.

Range and cues remain adjustable.

A systematic review found that resistance-training range can affect strength and lower-limb hypertrophy, while a separate review found that attentional-focus effects vary across lifting tasks and populations.
