Ab Wheel Isometric Hold

Hold a short, declared rollout position to practice trunk tension and range control without adding more distance.

Context image, not form instruction. Use the setup, execution, safety, and evidence record below.

01 / Set up

Build the position.

  1. Choose a rollout distance that can be reached and returned under control, then mark the wheel stop on the floor.
  2. Kneel on a mat, grip the wheel, and organize the shoulders, ribs, hips, and knees before rolling to the stop.

02 / Execute

Do the work.

  1. Roll to the marked stop while keeping the wheel and trunk line controlled.
  2. Hold the position for a short, repeatable count without letting the shoulders, hips, or wheel drift.
  3. Return to the start and reset the grip and kneeling base before the next hold.

Useful cues

Hold the range you own

Stay on the mark

Reset between holds

03 / Troubleshoot

Common ways it drifts.

  • Holding farther than the return can support
  • Treating shaking as a reason to extend the range
  • Losing the knees or wheel line during the hold

What this page can claim.

Research can support a training category or expose a hazard without proving every stance, range, cue, or progression on this page.

01

Resistance training is the supported category.

The 2026 ACSM position stand supports progressive resistance training for muscle function, hypertrophy, and physical performance in generally healthy adults, with multiple workable equipment and prescription choices.

02

Range and cues remain adjustable.

A systematic review found that resistance-training range can affect strength and lower-limb hypertrophy, while a separate review found that attentional-focus effects vary across lifting tasks and populations.

03

Trunk-control transfer is mixed.

A systematic review of 24 studies found mixed direct performance results and noted that core-stability work was often embedded inside broader training programs.
