Rotate + resist / Foundation

Pallof Press

Train the trunk to resist rotation while the hands move away from the body.

01 / Set up

Build the position.

  1. Secure an undamaged band near chest height and stand sideways to the anchor.
  2. Hold the band at the chest with both hands and step out to light, manageable tension.

02 / Execute

Do the work.

  1. Press the hands forward without allowing the torso to turn toward the anchor.
  2. Pause with the arms extended while breathing and maintaining full-foot pressure.
  3. Return the hands slowly to the chest and repeat before changing sides.

Useful cues

Stay square

Press straight ahead

Own the return

03 / Troubleshoot

Common ways it drifts.

  • Using tension that rotates the feet or pelvis
  • Holding the breath through every repetition

What this page can claim.

Research can support a training category or expose a hazard without proving every stance, range, cue, or progression on this page.

01

Resistance training is the supported category.

The 2026 ACSM position stand supports progressive resistance training for muscle function, hypertrophy, and physical performance in generally healthy adults, with multiple workable equipment and prescription choices.

02

Range and cues remain adjustable.

A systematic review found that resistance-training range can affect strength and lower-limb hypertrophy, while a separate review found that attentional-focus effects vary across lifting tasks and populations.

03

Trunk-control transfer is mixed.

A systematic review of 24 studies found mixed direct performance results and noted that core-stability work was often embedded inside broader training programs.

04

Band recoil is a real equipment hazard.

A single-site case series documented exercise-band eye injuries in 11 patients and 14 eyes, including lasting vision loss in some cases.
