Pull / Developing

Barbell Row

Practice a supported-by-position horizontal pull while the hinge, bar path, and return to the floor remain controlled.

01 / Set up

Build the position.

  1. Choose a clear loading and storage position, then set the feet, hands, and hinge angle with an unloaded bar.
  2. Brace the trunk and let the bar hang inside the declared range before beginning the first pull.

02 / Execute

Do the work.

  1. Pull the bar toward the lower ribs without changing the hinge angle to create extra range.
  2. Pause briefly at the highest controlled position, keeping the wrists and shoulders inside the planned path.
  3. Lower the bar slowly, reset the trunk and feet, and end the set before the hinge turns into a standing shrug.

Useful cues

Hinge once

Pull without standing up

Own the lower

03 / Troubleshoot

Common ways it drifts.

  • Adding weight until the torso rises on every repetition
  • Pulling past the range that the shoulders and trunk can control
  • Starting or ending the set in a crowded loading lane

01

Resistance training is the supported category.

The 2026 ACSM position stand supports progressive resistance training for muscle function, hypertrophy, and physical performance in generally healthy adults, with multiple workable equipment and prescription choices.

Range and cues remain adjustable.

A systematic review found that resistance-training range can affect strength and lower-limb hypertrophy, while a separate review found that attentional-focus effects vary across lifting tasks and populations.
