Hinge / Developing

Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift

Load the hip hinge while training hamstring tension, trunk control, and hip extension.

01 / Set up

Build the position.

  1. Stand tall with a dumbbell in each hand and keep the loads close to the thighs.
  2. Soften the knees, brace the trunk, and set the shoulders without pulling them back hard.

02 / Execute

Do the work.

  1. Push the hips backward while the dumbbells travel close to the legs.
  2. Stop when hamstring tension is strong or the trunk can no longer remain controlled.
  3. Drive the hips forward and return to standing without leaning backward.

Useful cues

Close the car door

Keep the weights close

Stand through the hips

03 / Troubleshoot

Common ways it drifts.

  • Turning the movement into a deep knee bend
  • Lowering the weights past the controllable hinge range

01

Resistance training is the supported category.

The 2026 ACSM position stand supports progressive resistance training for muscle function, hypertrophy, and physical performance in generally healthy adults, with multiple workable equipment and prescription choices.

02

Range and cues remain adjustable.

A systematic review found that resistance-training range can affect strength and lower-limb hypertrophy, while a separate review found that attentional-focus effects vary across lifting tasks and populations.
