Barbell Bench Press
Practice a supported horizontal press with a stable bench, a clear handoff, and a repeatable bar path.

01 / Set up
Build the position.
- Place the bench and rack so the feet, head, bar path, safeties, and return route remain clear before you load the bar.
- Set the hands and upper back on the bench, then rehearse the unrack and empty-bar touch point with a spotter or the declared support plan.
02 / Execute
Do the work.
- Unrack with the shoulders organized and move the bar to the start position without losing the planned foot and bench contact.
- Lower toward the controlled touch point while the elbows, wrists, and bar remain inside the range you can repeat.
- Press the bar back along the same path, finish the repetition, and return it to the rack only when the hooks are visibly aligned.
Useful cues
Build the bench contact
Lower to the range you own
Make the rack return visible
03 / Troubleshoot
Common ways it drifts.
- Choosing a load that requires a rushed handoff or an uncontrolled touch point
- Letting the wrists fold or the feet slide while trying to finish a repetition
- Returning the bar before the rack hooks are lined up

What this page can claim.
Research can support a training category or expose a hazard without proving every stance, range, cue, or progression on this page.
2 evidence notes / 3 source linksResistance training is the supported category.
The 2026 ACSM position stand supports progressive resistance training for muscle function, hypertrophy, and physical performance in generally healthy adults, with multiple workable equipment and prescription choices.

Range and cues remain adjustable.
A systematic review found that resistance-training range can affect strength and lower-limb hypertrophy, while a separate review found that attentional-focus effects vary across lifting tasks and populations.
